' Touch the brightly-colored button up there by the pommel.' ―Lightsaber hilts were the basic, all-encompassing part of a. A combination handgrip, and, it held within the inner workings of the weapon that allowed it to produce its distinctive energy-based blade. The first hilts were produced as early as the advent of the lightsaber itself, approximately; though cumbersome and requiring a backpack-mounted power source, the nonetheless began to embrace the technology.
Eventually these hilts evolved to only require a small belt-mounted pack, and again to a fully self-contained weapon system; such designs saw service as early as at the start of the. Over the thousands of years that followed, power technology and indeed the construction of lightsaber hilts continued to evolve, eventually encompassing, shorter hilts used in the off-hand, as well as, and designs. There are many unique hilts, such as the lightsaber hilt of, a. His hilt was made from the wood of a, which is as strong as metal. Both the Jedi and the used lightsaber hilts; the former regarding them as tools rather than weapons, while the latter sought to use their sabers to fuel their quest for power. Both Orders saw the construction of a lightsaber hilt to be one of the primary stages of a being's development within their ranks, mostly signifying that a or was ready to ascend to the next level.
Though double-bladed hilts were typically associated with the, practitioners of the, those who followed the occasionally preferred these over the commonly-accepted use of single hilts in. Despite to eradicate the Jedi, the technology of lightsaber hilts continued to live on as the Order that had originally supported them rose anew. In addition, other Force-using traditions, such as the, constructed lightsaber hilts. Contents Technology and construction ComponentsThe disassembled inner components of a lightsaber hilt.A lightsaber hilt contained many components, all of which were hand-selected by the Force-user who constructed it and tuned to be in harmony with each other at the completion of the weapon's creation. From to, such components typically included a, magnetic stabilizing loop followed by a ring tuning flange to ensure that the activated blade did not in turn burn through the hilt. Immediately below and mounted internally lay the blade arc tip, followed on the outside by the and blade length adjustment knobs. Following the arc tip were mounted the blade energy channel which was nested amongst the cycling field energizers.
Within the crystal energy chamber below this lay the focusing, the focusing crystal activator and the primary crystal which was attached to the primary crystal mount and situated between the lightsaber energy gate. The primary crystal mount was in turn connected to the, which served as the primary power source of the weapon. The power cell was in turn wrapped beneath the power field conductor, power vortex ring and an. Rounding out the components that went into a typical hilt were the handgrip connector and a sturdy belt ring.Gathering the various components to construct a lightsaber was relatively simple, given the utilitarian nature of the materials involved; typically, these were readily available commercially, with the exception of the crystals. In the pre- Jedi Order, such crystals could be found within Force-sensitive locations from across; these were typically places that resonated with a powerful dark or light-side presence in the Force. In the wake of the, however, the Jedi chose to limit their crystal harvesting to the frigid world of, which brimmed with that only produced blue and green blades. In the this restriction was not carried through, and Jedi of that era once again used a wide variety of gemstones that produced different-colored blades. Assemblytelekinetically assembles his lightsaber.Nearly every lightsaber hilt was unique in its construction, born of the Force-user who created it and using whatever materials were at hand; typically, such weapons were created over a span of months.
Ideally, the or who created it would go into deep, poring over each individual component to be added and thus forging a connection with it through. While the individual components of a lightsaber were relatively common and could be mass-produced, aligning them and the crystals required a supernaturally-steady hand guided by the Force. No attempt to mass-produce lightsabers ever succeeded. Types of hiltsThough each hilt was unique to the who created it, evolved. Included among these were the, a shorter design that was balanced to allow a or to use it comfortably in the off-hand; the, which was developed to accommodate the needs of; the, also known as the saberstaff, which projected a beam from each end of the hilt; and, least common of all, the. Dual-phase hilts were unique in that they allowed the person who had created them to adjust the beam length of their weapon; one setting typically used a standard blade length of approximately a meter or more, while the other setting could extend the blade out to three full meters. Such weapons were rare because there was no known style or practical use for the extended beam, beyond a startling surprise for an opponent.
Shotos and short lightsabers. Main article:Shotos, or short lightsabers as they were known during the, were secondary weapons that served much the same purpose as a in the off-hand of a combatant. They typically utilized the same components of regular lightsaber hilts, however both the hilt itself and the blade it produced were significantly shorter. Some Jedi or Sith, rather than using a normal-style lightsaber and a shoto, would instead use two shotos, one in each hand. Another style of short lightsaber, called a, utilized a rare perpendicular grip on the hilt. Many years later, shotos would see a resurgence as another form of energy-based weapon similar to the lightsaber, the, came to be developed.
Luke Skywalker constructed and utilized his own shoto after confronting the whip utilized by for the first time, using it to great effect the next time the pair met in combat. An assortment of lightsabers hilts, including:, and others. Their first reference was in the novelization of, when presents with lightsaber in the farmer's hut on. Since then they have persisted as one of the most iconic symbols of the Star Wars saga, including the films themselves and the litany of and non-canonical works. In early drafts of the script for A New Hope, however, these weapons were intended to be commonplace, in that common and troopers alike used them.Though most works that reference lightsaber construction use a more complicated method, within, much like, the process is markedly simplified. For instance, lightsaber construction is confined to a few simple parts and takes only 'a few hours' to accomplish.

However, most other sources state that construction can take up to a few months, with many more parts needed besides.Lightsaber hilts can be seen in the real world through a number of different series of Star Wars-licensed toys. Ranging from cheap plastic hilts that 'grow' a segmented, fitted blade when a button is pressed and the hilt is 'drawn', to hilts with blades lit from within by that also emit sounds and other features, to high-quality metal hilts that mount a blade with in-built lights. These hilts, manufactured and marketed by companies such as, are sometimes used in fan-organized sparring matches, such as those seen at various Star Wars conventions. In addition, more mechanically-inclined fans produce their own hilts through the use of a metalworking and inner wiring to produce lights, etc.

Sabermach Jay Chen proudly poses with one of his creations.Aloysius Low/CNETNot so long ago, in a country not so far away, there was a boy who dreamed of being a Jedi Knight. That boy was me. And though I never got the chance to become a Jedi Knight, my dream is a little closer to reality thanks to Singapore-based company Sabermach.I picked up one of the six lightsabers, admiring the weight of its hilt in my hand and striking my best Form II pose as I hit the power switch.
It sparked to life with a snap-hiss and a blue glow, emitting a hum that subtly changed depending on the way I swung the weapon. For years I've heard how fragile official Master Replica Force FX lightsabers can be, and so I expected that the lightsaber in my hand would easily break - but this wasn't the case. Sabermach's original designs were built for fencing. To prove this, founder Jay Chen lifted his lightsaber and brought it crashing down on the one I was holding.' Don't worry about it breaking,' he said with a chuckle. 'It's designed for heavy-duty use.

Even kendo users found it pretty sturdy.' I was worried, though, since I didn't want bits and pieces of a broken blade flying at my face. But the plastic easily held up under the abuse. Sabermach's smiths use a special threaded design that's about 1 inch wide to securely attach the 29-inch plastic tube that serves as the blade of the lightsaber. These blades strike a good balance. They're sturdy enough to take a pounding, but not so heavy or sharp that you have to worry about getting your hand sliced off, Luke Skywalker style, at the event of a duel. 'Unlike the sabers from the US, which are too thick, our products are sized for Asian hands,' said Chen. 'Our sabers are practical designs you can fight with, and have no unnecessary protrusions.
You'll realise that any of the lightsabers that you hold in your hands feel comfortable.' And indeed, they did feel very secure and comfortable to hold. Whether I held the lightsaber in one hand or with two, like they do the movies, it didn't feel like it was going to slip away if I did a quick twirl or flourished with it, like the wannabe Jedi I am. Passion and heartFor 31-year-old Chen, attention to detail and a passion for crafting his own lightsaber were the reasons why he now has a startup selling what he calls 'custom illuminated sabers.'
Sabermach doesn't license the official lightsabers from the Star Wars films, and instead uses six original designs for its blades. It also has a prototype design resembling the 'Force Awakens' villain Kylo Ren's crossguard lightsaber.By treading the fine line between licensing, Sabermach is able to offer Star Wars fans a way to make their Jedi Knight dreams come true without having to worry about the Disney empire striking back with copyright claims.' I think at the end of the day, it's really how we market it. I don't think whatever Disney is offering right now is usable for fencing, while ours are,' said Chen.' It's designed for heavy duty use.
Even kendo users found it pretty sturdy.' Chen isn't doing this all alone. He found a kindred soul in Kit Woo, who joined Sabermach as Creative Director.
Kit previously sold custom-made lightsabers under his own branding, Kit Sabers, but decided to hop on board with Chen.' I built sabers part time after office hours, though I started out late in building sabers, in my 30s,' said Kit.
'I built them out of PVC polyvinyl chloride parts with a saw and other tools. I learnt the basics of how to build lightsabers, and this took me a few years to finally start on metal builds.' Kit's also an active member of local saber fencing club,.

Obiwan KenobiJust as a Jedi Knight constructs his or her own lightsaber by hand, each Sabermach saber is hand-crafted from an anodized aluminum tube at Sabermach's factory in Singapore. The most complicated model is made from over 20 separate parts. The saber is designed in Google Sketchup before it's built. No special crystals are required, as the lightsabers are lit up with super bright LEDs. And, of course, there's no need for the Sabermech smiths to use the Force to align the internal components. Each design uses a semi-modular setup that's designed to allow for future mass production.
Sabermach takes care to ensure that each finished product comes out smooth, with no annoying burrs that may affect the way you hold the hilt. There are a total of six different designs, with names ranging from Conquistador to the Black Vantage, each with three different levels of effects and a display case. The basic Adept line costs S$449 (which roughly converts to $320, £210 or AU$440) but doesn't have any sound effects. The Expert line costs S$649 (which converts to $460, £310or AU$640) and features a light-up sound effect, three different blade colors and in-hilt charging (you don't have to remove the battery pack to charge). For the serious lightsaber fanatics, though, the Master series, at S$849 (converting to $600, £400 or AU$840), comes not only with a light up sound, but clashing effects - the lightsaber flashes when it hits another - and the ability to toggle blaster deflection sound effects. The Master blades also offer six different blade colours, letting you choose the color that best reflects your Force. There are six designs to choose from.Aloysius Low/CNETSabermach has also spent time perfecting the balance of the blades. Unlike the lightsabers in the movies, these real-life sabers have to be balanced around an actual blade, which itself needs to be able to withstand attacks. To ensure that the sabers are up to spec, Sabermach based the blade length and weight on Japanese swords - specifically a.This really impressed me. I used to do a bit of kendo, and the balance of Sabermach's lightsabers felt great.

While the weight is focused mostly towards the bottom of the hilt, the balance point is somewhere near the top, letting you easily control the momentum of a swing. There's also no rattling from internal components such as the speakers, as those parts are securely fastened. If you loved Darth Maul's dual-bladed lightsaber from Episode I, The Phantom Menance, Sabermach gives you the option to join two lightsabers together by unscrewing the bottom cover and using a special connector to link both hilts. The lightsaber hilts sport 1-inch deep threads to hold the 29-inch plastic blades securely in place.Aloysius Low/CNETNew beginningsFor now, Sabermach is still figuring out how to break into the international market. It's currently testing its products for Singapore, and has plans to sell its lightsabers to places like the US. It's currently setting up a website and will offer a 90-day warranty. This should reassure those who are intrigued but dubious of the prospect of a real-life lightsaber. While fighting lightsabers can be a niche market, Sabermach is confident it'll be making a profit by the end of the next year, and won't just be targeting the local customers in Singapore. It has ambitious plans to get its sabers sold overseas, and intends to sell them in bulk quantities once it begins mass production.' Right now, so far, we have produced quite a few sabers, out of which, we've given most of them out as samples display pieces and promotional items,' said Chen.'
To date, we have sold some of these sabers, but we still have lots of stocks left. Now, we make money per piece, and we're definitely confident of growing as a business.'

Notice that the Katarn hilt has a couple of colouredtriangles sticking out of it, you can see them in the picture above, one is Pink and one is Green. These are called Tags ( Warning:The colours of the Tags MAY differ for you, so don't worry if yoursaren't the same colour as mine). The pink one indicates where theLightsaber blade will come out and the green one indicates wherethe player's top hand will grip the hilt. Now, delete the Katarn lightsaber by selecting both sections (Katarn'shilt has two sections) and pressing your Deletekey. DO NOT delete the Tags! As you'regoing to use them for your own hilt. Now here's something that is weird, for some reason, if you putthe hilt into the game right now, your blade would be upside-down,meaning it will start where the pink tag is, but instead of ignitingupward, it will ignite downward, back through the hilt of your saber- which needless to say, is dumb. Don't quite know why it happens, but you can easily fix it by turning the pink tag upside down. Sojust select it, hit your Rotate tool andjust flip it over, as shown below.
